A small mountain community called Tui Na is located in the People's China's Shaolin province. There are very few buildings in the town, and it appears more like an unpolished logging village. I've always observed Tui Na to be extremely calm and serene. The reason I have a friendly vibe was the fact that I could learn Tai Na from a master who lived there and practised it every day.

I discovered tui-na from a master named Wang Xian, who also practiced at home. He had a number of books on the practice and also gave me his library so that I could study the books. I discovered that there are several schools of thought about the study of the tui-na. I read that there are seven meridians that are connected and that the body is connected to these meridians.

After reading many of the books I've read I learned that the seven meridians are named Chi, Qi, Blood bones, teeth joints and Materia. My research showed that na practitioners employ different massage strokes to treat each meridien. I also discovered that the traditional Chinese medicine believes that there are about twenty-four crucial points along the body that are connected to one another and are responsible for the organs of the body and tissues. Each organ and tissues are believed to be connected to a specific location. The 12 meridians are thought to run parallel to the chi within the body. When performing a tui-na massage it is possible for some practitioners to use the symbol that represents the 12 meridians.

The time came when the Chinese government and the United States started promoting Tui Na as a cure, Tui Na became very well-known throughout the West. Its popularity grew as did the appearance of TV shows that featured Chinese herbalists, who promoted the practice as an alternative form of treatment. I was able to watch one such show with two women who received massages with Tui Na massage following an exhausting day at work. I was impressed by the relaxation, the women were experiencing, as well as by the positive feedback they received from the staff of the massage facility.

A year later, I was referred to attend a highly-respected acupuncturist's Massage school. In the course of my visit I was taught by him how to give the Tui Na massage, and explained that he would perform the treatment on anyone who came to his shop. I was fascinated by the man with a simple appearance who was completely natural and didn't look like the type of person who would practice Acupuncture. His students were taught how to use their hands loosely in order to apply pressure on the Acupoints. They were not required to rely on fingers. He had me do some sessions with him before I was introduced to other practitioners employing the Tui Na system.

My experience with Tui Na had been wonderful. One of my first treatments made me feel as if my life had been transformed. I felt more energetic, alert, and lighter. The treatment made me feel more energized and my Chi flowed freely throughout my body. However, I was still sensitive to my skin, however overall I really enjoyed the Tui Na treatment.

Since then, I've come to know Tui Na and the fundamental concept that prompted its creation. The traditional theory of Tui Na is that the universe is comprised of energy, which is present in three separate kinds: Jing, Qi and Shen. Jing is considered to be the most soft of the three, and can be easily controlled by our minds, bodies and souls. Qi is the most powerful form and is believed by Tui Na practitioners as the most powerful power in the universe. Also, Shen, the dark energy, governs the relationships between Jing, Qi and Shen and is therefore the source of all evil.

Tui Na believes that any of these energy sources can harm the interplay between them and this will lead to the finality of our physical existence. Therefore, all three of these energies must be kept under control by a skilled practitioner.
