Books, Films and What They Do with One Location

Most people read something about a location before travelling to it and almost nobody reads anything afterwards. Afterwards is the better moment. Preparation constructs an imagined version. The book was accurate and partial. The account is specific. Looking for what was described. Observation gets replaced. Same text, different effect. The ground is laid. An account then adds to something that exists rather than constructing something that does not. The unresolved questions find answers. What was observed without comprehension. The best version. Interest fades on return. It passes. Immediately afterwards. Acting on it then rather than intending to act on it later is the whole method. Material written by somebody who lived somewhere differs from material written by somebody passing through. What is habitual. The notable features. Both are useful and contentment they are not interchangeable. Fiction set somewhere does something different again. It conveys texture rather than information. The risk is real. A novel set a century ago describes a location that has since changed completely. Nothing can meet it. Film has a stronger version of the same problem. The gap is larger. The motivation is unreliable. Taking one substantial book rather than several short ones suits a trip better. A fortnight permits something that ordinary weeks do not. The travellers who understand the places they go to acted on the curiosity in the week they returned.
