Players who want to explore the story of Original Sin 2 's main cast might have a hard time choosing who to play. After all, not only do they have unique skills, but they also offer unique interactions with other NPCs and story events. Unfortunately, this factor might make Original Sin 2 seem overwhelming on the get-go. However, players who want a quick recommendation might find it easy to pick a starting character in Divinity: Original Sin 2 . In the end, it might all be a matter of gameplay and story preference.
Updated May 26, 2024 by Rhenn Taguiam: Players eagerly awaiting Larian Studios’ new IPs after the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 may give Divinity Original Sin 2 a shot based on how its gameplay mechanics closely resemble the award-winning D&D adaptation. However, the difference in overall rulesets can make Original Sin 2 a daunting game to start, especially for players unfamiliar with the world of Rivellon and possible builds.
Thankfully, players can create starting characters that can suit first-time plays without sacrificing a quality experience. Such examples include capitalizing on an Elf’s extra movement potential and the Wayfarer’s expanded toolkit, as well as the Lizard’s elemental resistance and the Metamorph’s penchant for unique attacks.

Among setups in Divinity Original Sin 2 gameplay , the Elf Wayfarer is a recommended build as it takes advantage of the versatility of the Wayfarer and the Elf’s access to more actions per turn. Thanks to Flesh Sacrifice (Ability, StrategyLair Games Elf), this build can immediately get +1 AP per turn in exchange for less Constitution.
While this means having access to less Vitality in combat, the Wayfarer compensates for its ranged supremacy. Pin Down (Huntsman 1) can Cripple targets from afar to hinder them from moving, while Fossil Strike (Geomancer 1) can set up oil puddles for explosive damage. This works well with Elemental Arrowheads (Huntsman 1) that generate special arrows based on surfaces, as the extra AP from Flesh Sacrifice can make the Elf Wayfarer immediately shoot an explosive arrow instead of waiting for the next turn.
An Elf Wayfarer can capitalize on Flesh Sacrifice to secure extra Action Points throughout a match. Despite its initial penalties, players being able to do more with the Elf Wayfarer at the onset gives them opportunities to kill enemies much faster than they can do damage to them.

Courtesy of the Red Prince in Divinity Original Sin 2 , his ancestry among the Lizards proves how the Race can be one of the most charming examples of a culture outside the confines of Rivellon. In terms of a build, the Lizard Metamorph highlights such an exotic flair that emphasizes the Race’s defensive capabilities, this time courtesy of Sophisticated, which provides +10% to both Fire and Poison Resistances. This alone works well with Dragon’s Blaze (Ability, Lizard) which hits enemies hard while leaving a trail of flames.
Choosing the Metamorph as a preset Origin will also elevate the build’s penchant for unique attacks through the Polymorph Skill School.
