Structural Integration ( SI) is a technique based on skills somesthetic massage, usually involving manual therapy, that examines the possibility of alteration in the way you feel and use your body throughout the day. Masterful manual touch brings immediate relief from stress and pain, and the awareness of how you're doing with your upper body can help you make better decisions. Imagine structural integration as a tool to change the world! It has been demonstrated that those who utilize their bodies in ways that align with their values and goals have an increased sense of well-being and happiness, as well as physical wellbeing. They are more successful in their careers and have higher ratios of education to career, and attain greater levels of success at work. What can structural integration do for you?

Through my studies with clients, I've discovered that Structural Integration Therapy can help to: (a) Align Posture: Most office workers suffer from postural problems and posture-related issues. Office workers are constantly putting pressure on their spines and postures by sitting in a bent position or bending forward to reach something. (b) Reduce back pain: The number one reason that office workers take days off sick and missed periods due to back pain. In fact, according to one study office workers missed 15% of their days of work due to back pain throughout the period of a typical year. (c) Strengthen your lower back, or rebuild it: A significant portion of the population suffers from poor posture, which is also known as lordosis. This condition affects the muscles and the spine. Flexibility: Being unable to maintain smooth and tight joint and muscle motion is a major stumbling block to optimal performance in many professional fields, including the home and sports.

Most clients I see seek immediate relief from joint pain, muscle pain, or facet joint (back pain) by using massage chairs. What they do not realize is that massage therapy is just one aspect of Structural Integration Therapy. It is not the solution to all their problems. Structural Integration Therapy also involves the proper alignment of the spine that can improve the quality of their physical life. (e.g., by aiding them to sit up straight) and, where applicable teaching their therapists about correct postural habits and techniques to address the root causes of pain. Through these other methods clients can assist their therapists identify the physical problems that are creating their discomfort.

How do you apply Structural Integration Therapy applied? First, clients are examined for any injuries that may be present. Then , a physical exam is conducted, usually consisting of a diagnostic and functional review of the client's body and the environment. Next, a customized program of therapeutic touch or manipulation is developed to meet the individual's needs and goals. Once a plan has been established and implemented Massage therapists can work with the patient to explore and implement their chosen approach.

Common procedures used in structural integration include therapeutic touch and manual therapy. Manual therapy employs techniques and movements to align joints and soft tissues throughout the body. Soft manipulation of tissues is used for repair and maintenance of muscles, ligaments and tendons. Both methods can be utilized in combination or separately to specifically target areas. Both methods can be combined with ultrasound therapy or heat therapy to further target areas of pain.

To start structural integration, a diagnostic examination is performed to determine the root of pain, stiffness or weakness. Next, a treatment protocol is designed and implemented. Sessions could last anywhere from 30 to 60 minutes and are typically performed by a certified massage therapist who is skilled in structural integration.
