The Lomilomi and Native Massage of Oceania is among the most interesting things that happened to our planet. It was a culture revolution when the people of Oceania arrived on the islands. It was here that they learned about the importance of their cultural beliefs and practices , and how they could aid in healing their fellow human beings. As they gained knowledge about the world, and other cultures they began to modify their traditions to create what we call the Lomilomi or indigenous massage of Oceania. This is the story behind the origins of this practice.

Many of you know that the people of Oceania were among the first to inhabit Earth. Before humans came onto the scene they had lived in a society which was very organized and sophisticated. Everything was controlled by rituals and the method of movement was based on the use of ritual. There were no automobiles or televisions, and little else.

As the first humans arrived on the island, they utilized the native baskets, trees, plants and rocks to make clothing and shelter. While the initial tools were simple, people soon realized that they could combine certain materials to make tools out of other materials. For instance, the native plant makua broke into compounds that could be used to form weapons. As the island expanded, more cultures emerged, these unique relationships between people started to take physical form. This is the reason for both the Lomilomi tradition and the techniques employed by the early Oceania nations. This type of spiritual and physical connection between people began to be put into written form as a way of controlling communication.

The idea of using massage therapy for healing was quickly adopted by a large number of people all over the world. It became popular for the wealthy in Europe and America and gradually began to spread into the developing world. While there are many similarities between our worlds and theirs but the Oceania civilizations and the Lomilomi have more to provide. The foundations of the Oceania societies differed from those of the Lomilomi. The Lomilomi required physical and spiritual nourishment, and the Oceania societies had to provide the means to maintain the social and political structure while maintaining technological advancement.

Both cultures developed a distinct system of medicine that was unique to their respective regions and time. Unfortunately, there isn't much documentation about the history of massage therapy in Oceania or Lomilomi. However this information is preserved through oral traditions. These oral traditions offer clues into the history of the practice and provide us with the tools to understand the most significant culture in the world. Massage practices can be traced back the Oceania and Lomilomi cultures. Their beliefs about nature and the forces that determine our future are the foundation of the current massage practices.

Massage was a healing ritual that was practiced by Oceania and Lomilomi societies in the beginning. The Lomilomi were, for instance, wrapped their wounds in the milk of the sacred plant, Nupata (pronounced no-PAHT) and would massage the skin of the warrior as a symbol of healing and good fortune. Likewise, the Oceana people would use the steam from the eruption of a volcano to soothe their wounds and the Polynesians believed that salt water could heal injuries and that the powder from feathers of birds could help them heal. These were the earliest forms of massage therapies that we are familiar with today.

As you might expect as you would expect, the two cultures had very different opinions about how massage should be utilized. The Lomilomi believed in its own massage therapy and believed that it played a significant role in Polynesian culture. The Oceania people were more open to alternative therapies and their philosophy about massage therapy was that the body could heal itself.
